How we fit boots, and why it takes forty minutes
30 September 2026. From the Wrexby fitting bench.
People sometimes ask why a boot fitting here takes forty minutes when a shoe shop takes five. The honest answer is that a shoe is worn on pavement and a boot is worn on a hill with twelve kilos on your back, and the hill does not forgive a half size.
What we measure
Length standing, length seated, width at the ball, volume over the instep, and the difference between your two feet, which is bigger than most people think. We measure in the sock you will walk in.
What we watch
You walk the ramp up and down, and we watch for heel lift on the way up and toe contact on the way down. Both are what give you blisters at hour four, and neither shows up standing still on a carpet.
What we will not do
We will not sell you a boot that fits in the shop but not on the hill, and we will not sell you a boot because it is the one you came in for. If the right boot is one we do not stock, we will say so and tell you who does.
The bench is open seven days at all three stores. No appointment, and the kettle is on.
